2021.10.26 23:50 XMadxWolfX Tales of Arise - The rebirth of the series?
Hey guys it took me a bit longer than expected since I got distracted with Diablo 2 Resurrected, but now that I’ve finally completed the game, I wrote a maybe not so short review and made a video for it too. What did you guys think about the game?
Released on September 2021 around five years after the release of the last non-remaster title in the series back in Japan, Tales of Arise shoulders the responsibility of bringing a series that has been with us since 1995 back into fray since the latest ones were at best divisive. Let us see if this game manages to achieve its lofty goals.
Story and Characters
Straightforward. Most of this review could boil down to this word, but the story in particular advances in a simple and predictable way that touches a lot of issues that by now seem characteristic to the Tales series. Due to this, the story feels familiar and for the most part keeps moving in a clear direction, but this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have any surprises along the way. If anything, I’d say that the main problem with the story is that it moves very relaxedly for the first two thirds and then rampages forward in the last part. This last section is interesting and surprisingly it does manage to answer most questions nicely even if sometimes it’s just a simple line of dialogue that clarifies something you were wondering about. However, the balance between gameplay and story does suffer a bit here due to long sections full of cinematics and almost no combat, which some people might dislike.
The cast of characters is very balanced. For the first time I think I don’t dislike anyone, but in a similar way, I didn’t really end up loving any of them. I think they played things safe here by following some known-to-work character tropes, but I have to give them props for making the characters’ development feel gradual and likeable instead of just taking a 180 degree turn at the last minute for plot’s sake like we had seen in other titles.
Graphics and music
I have to accept that I was surprised by how nice the game sounds and, in particular, looks. It might be the prettiest game I have seen with this style of graphics. The views are wonderful, the characters look nice, and the effects and animations keep things exciting and fun even when you have seen a special attack happen over a hundred times. I’m happy to see the PS3 era graphics left behind. The music, sound effects, and voices are also ok, but not really memorable. I’ve heard some people don’t like the English voices, but I didn’t really have problems with them and changing them to Japanese is always an option available if needed.
Nothing to hide here. The game is very linear and full of hallways. There are a few bigger areas, but if you are expecting an open game, you will be totally disappointed. In my case however, I don’t think that all games need to be open worlds, I’d actually hate it. I think the maps have enough secondary pathways and hidden items to keep things interesting, but I have to accept that in some areas this linearity took me a bit out of the action. Some locations are hyped about and in theory should be huge, but when you finally get there, you only find a few interconnected hallways. I noticed this mostly happens at the end (and in the first basically tutorial area) which leads me to believe they ran out of time to do more. Surprisingly though (or maybe not), I still prefer this to how soul less and auto generated the dungeon and map design felt in the last couple of games in the series. They are linear, but you can at least notice that a human being designed them.
Exploration mostly involves going through combat areas and cities in a classic style with some things thrown around to keep you distracted, like fishing, looking for owls to unlock costumes, cooking food to give you bonuses, or working on side missions. Sometimes you will need a character’s ability to unlock an area by doing things like breaking a rock or create some vines to climb, but this doesn’t really feel like anything more than a “You need this character to join you before you proceed” kind of situation. One important thing, however, is that these actions consume CP and boy do I have some things to say about that.
The combat is still what one might expect of the series, but with a lot more mobility and flair. You move around the combat arena that appears when you touch an enemy freely and attack either normally or use special abilities called artes that go from special attacks you can combo to elemental or healing magic. Using artes uses some combo points that you have so you can’t do them forever and you have to take short (very short) breaks for them to recharge. As you progress, you’ll get more of this and you’ll be able to chain more things together. Each character also has a special support skill that they can use after filling a constantly refilling bar that does different things like breaking shields, trapping fast enemies, cancelling enemy magic attacks, or that you can just use to keep your combos going since they usually give you an extra couple of combo points when used.
When hit, there is also the option for your characters to enter a special state in which they can use all the artes they want until a bar runs out or you activate a special finish move. Combat is mostly fast and depends on evading a lot since enemies do a lot of damage and trying to make the longest possible combos since each enemy also has a sort of bar that increases when you attack them without receiving damage and that activates an insta-kill move to be done on them when filled. Enemies do seem to have a lot of health, but these insta-kill moves help a lot to speed things up, so you’ll be seeing them a whole lot.
To finish talking about combat we need to speak about healing. In this game they decided to have it limited by some party shared points called CP, yes the same ones that you use for exploration abilities. Healing magic spends these depending on how strong the spell is and once they are done, that’s it, you can’t cast more healing magic. Besides using any healing items you have, you can either restore CP with some special items, which are pretty expensive specially at the beginning, or camp out at specific points to recover all of them. Now, I think this sounds pretty cool since it gives a sense of dwindling resources that makes things more interesting, but added to how important well-timed dodging is to avoid damage… and how terrible the AI is at doing so… well let’s just say you’ll run out of CP even if you personally never get hit. Added to some things like not being able to make your companions focus the same target as you or use elements according to the enemies’ weaknesses, I think we have found an area that really needed more work and consideration.
Luckily, the difficulty selection is very friendly, so you can always reduce or increase it to a point where you are having fun. In my case I started on hard and even though I had a few close encounters due to CP and not having items to replenish it, I had a lot of fun and I think it actually added a bit to the experience (I’m kind of masochistic on these things though) Later on I decided to go through places in the normal difficulty level, fight bosses on hard, and set it to easy when grinding or farming for materials. That’s why if you hear someone say this game is impossible without buying DLC, you should probably ignore them and consider not paying attention to them in the future.
Speaking of DLC, a lot of people got angry cause the costumes you can buy actually have special titles that come with them. Titles are basically like mini- ability trees that you use points gained in battle to activate. You get these titles by doing many things from advancing the story to cooking or finishing something in particular, but the dlc costume titles allow you to get some abilities either earlier or on characters that wouldn’t have them at all. I think this could be a problem if these titles were needed, but I actually thing having these extra abilities might actually unbalance the experience and make things worse, so as someone who completed the game without any problems, I can say they are no big deal. Another point of complaint is that when you are camping there is a little message telling you about the latest DLC. I personally didn’t even think about it until I read comments on it, but if these things bother you, you should take them into consideration.
I also need to mention that although location variety is good, enemy variety isn’t that great so you’ll find a lot of reskins like big lizard, big lizard of fire, big arcane lizard and so forth. This helps to know what support skills you’ll need to use, but does feel a bit lazy.
To finish, the duration of the game is around 50 to 60 hours for the main story and at least 10 to 20 extra hours to finish the post-game missions and everything else needed to get the trophy. In general, I’d say the game finishes just before you get bored of it and the extra content and new game plus are there for people that really want to keep going.
A great game that fans of the series should enjoy, but that has some things that I could not just overlook. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed myself and the great job they did in most areas so I’m very positive about it and the future of the series since now that they have a new mold to work with, they can work on things that were a bit weak on this one like the pacing, AI, enemy variety, and dungeon design in future titles. Although not perfect, this is a very well-done game that most people should enjoy if they can look beyond its flaws and that has put the series back into people’s eyes.

2021.10.26 23:50 Trade2Retire22 Red Flag?
I ordered a POD that was delivered on a Friday to a new community still under construction, 3 or 4 homes left to build out of 20. On Monday I get an email from the HOA management company who oversees the HOA until it’s fully voted in and established and I received a covenant violation stating my POD is breaking the rules. A new neighbor called it in, isn’t that wonderful. Just trying to move into my house in an economical fashion and I’m already getting fucked by the neighbors. Thoughts?

2021.10.26 23:50 overnightgamer Multiple dwelling property investments
Hi everyone, since looking into it and our borrowing power limitations (with help from MortgageHQ, those guys are on the level big time) we are looking for rentals outside of Auckland.
Now I possibly have a really stupid, but hopefully easy question. How can I search for multi-dwellings on TradeMe or is there a better search engine?
Also, what areas of NZ would be considered better to buy? I checked that New Plymouth only had a total of 40 rentals on TradeMe and didn't know if this was a good or bad sign.
Any useful granites of knowledge appreciated. Up for some good reading as well if you can recommend some.

2021.10.26 23:50 Kevp1981 I hope this is could be discussed in a future Q&A
I was wondering if you could speak a bit into getting onto a good path after separation from your spouse?
I have been trying to reconcile our marriage for nearly a year. During that time we attended counselling, but she was not receptive to the ideas presented. She also had an affair whilst we were doing this, and generally did not do anything to promote reconciliation.
5 weeks ago she told me that she has found a house to rent. We have two children, 10 and 7, and I had to tell them that we were separating. It wrecked me, it is the most sad and angry and resentful I have ever felt toward anyone, ever.
I have been seeing a psych during all of this, and trying to stay productive and useful.
**I'm struggling to make decisions that benefit me/ make me feel good right now. I fear the opportunity cost to my future self.**
I know that depression makes decision making problematic, and I am struggling to find a way to make financial decisions for my own happiness, despite believing it's probably a good idea.
Thankyou for what you do, for championing honesty and integrity, for continuing to strive forward when you had plenty of reasons to stop. You are an inspiring human, and we are so fortunate to have your way of seeing the world at our fingertips. I appreciate what you do deeply.
